Background of the Study
Historical sound shifts in the Hausa language have been profoundly influenced by oral traditions and poetic expression, particularly among traditional poets in Kano. Poets, as custodians of linguistic heritage, often preserve archaic sound patterns even as everyday speech evolves. Over time, shifts in vowel quality, consonant clusters, and intonation have been observed, reflecting both natural linguistic evolution and external influences such as trade and colonization (Salihu, 2023). In Kano, traditional poetry serves as a medium for both artistic expression and historical documentation. These poets have contributed to the continuity of linguistic forms that might otherwise be lost, offering insights into the phonological history of Hausa. By analyzing poetic recitations, archival recordings, and contemporary renditions, researchers can trace the evolution of sound patterns in Hausa and understand the factors driving these changes. This study focuses on the role of traditional poets in maintaining and transforming Hausa phonology, shedding light on the interplay between artistic expression and language change (Ibrahim, 2024; Musa, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although traditional poets play a crucial role in preserving Hausa phonological features, there is limited systematic research on historical sound shifts among these artists. Inconsistent documentation and variations in poetic styles have led to gaps in understanding how phonological changes occur over time (Salihu, 2023). This lack of clarity poses challenges for language standardization and education, as well as for preserving cultural heritage. The study seeks to address these issues by evaluating historical sound shifts in Hausa as reflected in traditional poetry, providing a clearer picture of linguistic evolution among poets in Kano (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To document historical sound shifts in Hausa through traditional poetry.

  • To analyze the factors driving phonological change.

  • To propose methods for preserving traditional phonological forms.

Research Questions:

  • What phonological shifts are evident in Hausa traditional poetry?

  • How do external influences affect these sound changes?

  • What strategies can aid in preserving historical phonological features?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a focused analysis of phonological evolution in Hausa through the lens of traditional poetry. The findings will inform language preservation efforts and enhance our understanding of historical sound shifts, benefiting educators, linguists, and cultural custodians (Salihu, 2023; Musa, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to historical phonological analysis in traditional Hausa poetry from Kano; excludes non-poetic discourse.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Sound Shifts: Changes in the pronunciation of language over time.

  • Traditional Poets: Artists who preserve linguistic heritage through poetry.

  • Hausa: The language of the Hausa people.
